Intellectual Property: Case Study 1
A Creative Commons rights infringement case study - Illustration of a Civet Cat
The artwork was licensed under a Creative Commons ATTRIBUTION license. It was used by a Facebook page owner without crediting the original creator, and the original creator's name on the image had also been removed. Under the license, all the user had to do was credit Ivan Chew (the creator for the artwork) and he/she would be free to modify, repurchase, even sell the image.
Ivan wrote to the FB page owner a private FB message identifying himself as the image creator and requested that he remove the image. There was no response after 2 days, so Ivan left a public comment on the (modified) image that the Facebook user posted. Under CC (or CC‐BY), even if Ivan was uncomfortable with his artwork being used that way, the Facebook user still had every right to reuse it. Ivan reported to Facebook with necessary details. Facebook took down the image.
